An Optimized Method for the Determination of Volatile and Semi-volatile Aldehydes and Ketones in Ambient Particulate Matter

چکیده
A method has been developed to measure aldehydes and ketones associated with atmospheric particles. Carbonyl compounds from particulate material collected on Teflon-coated glass-fiber filters were simultaneously extracted and derivatized with an appropriate 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH) solution. The efficiency of this procedure utilizing various 2,4-DNPH concentrations and solvent compositions was studied for 13 carbonyl compounds of atmospheric importance. These include formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, dicarbonyls such as glyoxal and methylglyoxal, and biogenic carbonyls such as pinonaldehyde and nopinone. An extraction solution containing 3 10 M 2,4-DNPH, in 60% acetonitrile/40% water, and pH 3 was most efficient in extracting and derivatizing these aldehydes and ketones (83–100% recovery). Improved sample enrichment and 2,4-DNPH purification methods were developed that afforded detection limits of 0.009–5.6 ngm . The relative standard deviation for replicate analyses were 1.9–10.1%. Carbonyl compounds in ambient particulate samples were quantified during a recent field study. Median values for nine carbonyl species ranged from 0.01–33.9 ngm 3 during the study.

This study addresses emissions from office equipment with a literature review and measurements from two phases of controlled chamber experiments. Phase I experiments screened for the types of pollutants emitted from five classes of computers and printers placed in a 20 cubic meter stainless steel chamber. Phase II experiments measured volatile organic compounds, low‐molecular‐weight aldehydes, ...

ABSTRACT: A combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with headspace solid-phase micro extraction (SPME) method has been employed for the analysis of the flavor volatiles of three different rice cultivar, including two modified Iranian rice cultivars and Hashemi rice cultivar during gelatinization. The proposed combination provided a powerful system for easy and rapid screening of a...

This study investigated pollutants emissions from filling stations and their impact on the air quality. Gas monitors were employed to identify the different pollutants present in the ambient air of the study areas. متن کاملThe evaluation of heavy metals concentration related to PM10 in ambient air of Ahvaz city, Iran
Airborne particulate matter along with volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and other compounds have raised many concerns to many countries including Iran. In this study, the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Al) associated with PM10 have been investigated during normal and dusty days from September to February 2012. The mean PM10 concentrations on the norma...
